It reminded me of Hocus Pocus and the books I've been reading 'Fablehaven'. In both of these things at some point they use a circle of salt to protect themselves. So I guess a circle of shoes works too.

Safe
After cleaning out Abi's closet of all the shoes that don't fit her anymore I stuck them next to some totes by the door to the basement to take down this week when we clean and organize it. Well, yesterday morning (Sunday) Doug and I were in the family room talking and Abi was playing in the playroom when she said, "Okay, now I'm safe." We looked over and this is what we saw:
