Many of you may have seen the video by Rebecca Black, "Friday" during this past year as it became an internet sensation basically because people were making fun of it.
I have to admit that Doug and I had quite a laugh over the song and video the first time we saw it.
Then one Friday morning the girls wanted to dance and I thought it would be funny to put that song on.
Maddy instantly fell in love with it and now we have to listen to it all the time.
Below is a little video of her singing along and dancing.
So, if you ever see us out and here her singing to herself, "Friday, Friday" while she is playing... yes, she is singing this song.
Songs you listen to when you're bored, happy, sad, mad, hyped:
Post edit: I have removed the playlists because I was told it was slowing down and messing with the blog a bit and I noticed that on my end as well.
Most of you know I love music and I really do get in moods based on what I listen to. Some of these are songs I listen to if I am already feeling this way and some I listen to if I want to change my mood.
The first list is my
Happy List
These are the songs I listen to when I am cranky and want to feel happy or I am in a kind of happy bubbly mood.
It's got some Owl City, The Killers, Vampire Weekend, Muse, The Hush Sound, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Neil Diamond (yes, I did say that) and Alphabeat.
The next list is my
Edgy List
It's really not that edgy but it is the kind of music I listen to when I want to feel like more than just the 'mom'. It's what I listen to when I want to feel like me. The girl that may be a mom and may be pretty conservative but still rocks the black nail polish and wishes I could get away with wearing a tutu and combat boots and pink streaks in my hair.
It consists of Paramore, 30 Seconds to Mars, Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, Pink, and Evanescence.
This next one is my
Stressed List
This is the music I listen to when I am feeling really laid back or I want to calm down because I am stressed or anxious.
It has Enya, Owl City, Emmy Rossum, A Fine Frenzy, Patrick Swayze, Christopher Cross, and 311. It would have Yanni but they don't have him on their site that I could find. My favorite Yanni song is Acroyali/ Standing in Motion.
Here we have my
Happy Bored List
This is the happy list that I would listen to if I'm already happy and just want to sing along to some fun songs.
It has Avril Lavigne, One Republic, Mumford and Sons, and Paramore and would also include some of the slower songs of Alphabeat if they would have had them. Also I really like Pink's song "Also known as Less than perfect" - I won't write down the real title. But, I like the cover Julia Sheer did of it without the swears.
When I'm feeling
Nostalgic
I listen to old eighties and early nineties songs. Pretty much anything from then can make me feel happy but I love Aha's Take on me. I also added Taylor Swifts Back to December because it takes me back to high school.
And finally when I just want to
Dance
and I don't really care about singing ability or depth of the song I go for a little Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha, and Miley Cyrus(only her Party in the USA song because my girls love it).
I look forward to the Grammy Awards and Academy Awards the way others look forward to the Super Bowl. I think this year the Grammys did not disappoint. There were so many awesome performances. Muse rocked like usual and once again I found myself so glad that Doug and I were able to see them back in the day in a small club where we could brush elbows with them before they were big in the US. As usual, the awards show introduced us to some new artists that I had never heard of. I think our favorite of the night was Mumford and Sons. I had never heard of them or any of their music and we were both in love with them immediately. It is hard to describe their sound but Doug and I came up with folksy alternative rock. I have no idea what they are really classified as but here is a taste of Mumford and sons...
Another favorite we had never heard of was The Avett Brothers. They have kind of a similar sound...
I have mentioned many times on this blog as well as the Disney blog that Maddy just loves music and loves to dance. I was browsing youtube the other day for some good upbeat music to clean to and put on Beyonce's Single Ladies. The girls immediately loved this song and video. It was so funny. Maddy was going crazy. I had to tape it and I love watching it so much that I decided to share it even though the room is so chaotic. The girls had been playing with practically every toy in the family room so it was a disaster and Maddy kept trying to play with the computer so I had overturned a chair in front of it to block her. So, try not to pay attention to the mess and just watch Maddy;s sweet moves and Abi trying to imitate the real dance moves!
And just in case any of you wanted to see the songs video, here it is...
Finally some new music from Alphabeat! You may remember them as one of our favorite bands (Doug, myself, AND Abi) and these are two of the new songs. I know they sound eighties but they are a new band... that's kind of what we like about them!
Apparently the first video you have to go to you tube to watch it.. ClickHerefor the link to Hole In My heart
A while ago I let you in on our love of a little band from Europe called Alphabeat... I am on a mission to introduce the world to this music! Just kidding but it is the most listened to CD by all 3 of us around here.
I don't really know how to describe my 'kind' of music. I tend to gravitate toward the more alternative types. I love The Killers, Coldplay, 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse, Paramore, etc... but the following two bands are a little different. I heard Alphabeat describe their music as 'Wonky Pop' and I think that could describe both of my favorite bands at this moment... Alphabeat and The Hush Sound.
I already posted an Alphabeat video for Fascination a while back. That is one of my favorite songs. This one "Go Go" is mine and Doug's other favorite...
This one is a fun one that Abi and I like to sing. She sometimes breaks out singing this while playing quietly(word for word)
Boyfriend is a little cheesy but fun. We like it best when the guy sings toward the end.
This is Abi's absolute favorite. This video is a little older than the others. This song, "Fantastic Six", is about super heroes. Abi calls this "Woo hoo" just like the Cootie game. I guess that is what she christens things she loves...
The next three videos are by our other favorite THe Hush Sound. They are from Chicago....
I decided to post these, by the way, because I was going to post movie reviews today and we are watching Lost Season 2 currently and have not finished it so I have no reviews to give!!
I know... I know... it's not Thursday. I started this post on Thursday and didn't get around to finishing it so here it is a few days late. (this could have something to do with the fact that we ended up at the hospital for so long that night!)
My 13 favorite concerts I've ever been to: (in random but mostly chronological order)
1. The first one I was thinking of is kind of weird. It was a big group of singers including Richard Marx (Hot Jam '91)and I won tickets and back stage passes from the radio. My best friend in junior high, Kelsey, my sister Steph, and I went downtown for it. I doubt it was that great but I remember feeling so cool going backstage and meeting all of the musicians. We got a lot of signatures- I have no idea where they are now. The funniest thing about it is that I remember it being this huge thing but I can't find a journal entry about it and I don't remember who else was there and who we met. Steph, do you remember?
2. Oingo Boingo- October 1991: Kelsey and I were allowed to go to this concert all by ourselves. Woo hoo. They were one of my favorite bands at the time so it was amazing. We were even on the news in the background jumping up and down during Dead Man's Party. We felt so cool. It was a great concert though.
3. New Kids on the Block- Unfortunately I can't remember the exact date but it was sometime in 1991/1992. I went with ....wait for it... my MOM! She was a fan as well although not a silly screamy fan- she just liked some of their songs. We had a blast together which was pretty cool since at that point in my life (junior high) we did not get along that great. We were way up in the nosebleed section but it was still so much fun.
4. Blonde Eugene- Not any concert in particular but I have to mention them. This band was a small local one that consisted of a few guys I knew. Two were my best friend Jenny's brothers (one of which I dated very briefly) and we all thought they were the coolest band ever. We went to every concert for probably about 3-4 years.
5. Another multi band concert for a country station: country is not my favorite type of music but I went to this with my mom and my brother Greg one summer. Collin Raye was just starting out and I really liked his songs. At this particular outdoor concert all of the smaller bands were hanging out at booths so you could meet them. I spotted Collin Raye and approached him. I told him how I was a huge fan. He told me I was sweet and gave me a huge hug and signed my notebook. Soon after that he became a much bigger star so I always loved this memory.
6. Duran Duran: August of 1993 with my best friends Jenny and Lora and our three significant others Matt, Chuck, and Taylor. This was up at Park City and was amazing. I loved every minute of it.
7. Paul Revere and the Raiders and Lovin' Spoonful: April 1994: Our police lady friend gave Jenny and I free tickets to this concert sponsored by the police. We were pretty much the only people there under 50 and had no idea who they were. Then the music started and we recognized the songs. It was so much fun. We danced like maniacs and then met the bands afterward. Since we didn't have pictures or albums like the other people did, we had them sign paper towels that we grabbed out of the bathroom. They hesitated at first and then laughed about it.Paul Revere:
Lovin' Spoonful:
8. Depeche Mode: May 1994 with my friend Jason. This was one of the best concerts ever. We had such a great time. It was in Park City. There is also a crazy story. After the concert when we were back in SLC we went to some people that we were with's apartment and Jason almost got smooshed by a drunk guy that came flying into the parking lot... and already had a big huge dent in the front of his car and windshield.
9. John Denver, Eddie Money, and America: March 1995 with my friend Jason again. It was a free concert downtown outside. It was amazing. America was great but the highlight of the night was John Denver. I really loved his music-I grew up listening to it but the most amazing thing about it was how he was sitting on this stool with just a guitar and a microphone and sounded better than he did on CD's. It was so great. Now that he has passed away I am so grateful that I was able to experience that while he was still here.
10. Colors: May 1995- This was just another local band that came up to our Young Women's Camp during this summer. First of all, I don't know who's idea it was to have 3 cute boys that were really talented come up to a girls camp full of silly 12-18 year olds that haven't seen a boy in 4 days but.... we all loved it. We met them afterward as well.
11. Yanni: 1997- I love Yanni. It's no secret. I've been to his concerts 3 times but the first one was particularly special. We flew to Connecticut to see him at the Foxwoods casino. The show was very intimate... we were about 10 feet away from him. (maybe closer) It was AMAZING!
12. Midnight Oil: 2002- Doug and I went to this when we were dating. They were one of my favorite junior high bands so it was so nostalgic. The concert was big and noisy but we had a great time.
13. Muse: This was in 2004 a few months after we were married. They played in a small club/bar downtown so there was a really small crowd. We were front row standing right beneath their stage. It was great but VERY loud. We said hi to them as they walked off which was pretty cool.
Honorable mention: Some of you may know that Doug was in a band in high school and I was a groupie. So, there were a few 'gigs' for Xstatic attended throughout those years. (They later changed their name when they started doing 'real' shows but we weren't really in contact anymore so I didn't go to any of those.)
I have a very diverse interest in music going from instrumental (Yanni) to rock like 30 Seconds to Mars. My favorite music to listen to tends to lean toward the alternative rock to classic rock areas. My favorites are definately The Hush Sound right now. But today I want to focus on William Joseph. I first learned about him at Women's Conference at BYU. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy the concert because I don't tend to get into LDS musicians. I don't know why- it's just not usually very upbeat. I was really tired (didn't know I was pregnant with Abi yet) and hungry. Mom and I grabbed some yogurt shakes and went in. Most of the music was okay but like I said, not my thing. But then they announce William Joseph. He comes out to play on a piano. I didn't immediately think it would be exciting either but I do love piano music (see my love of Yanni!) so I perked up. Then he asks if any of us like rock music. What? He proceeds to play this amazing rendition of KASHMIR!! I couldn't believe it. His music was amazing! So, the next week I went right out and bought his CD which is still one of my favorites. I just recently found out that he has a new CD out and I found this video of him performing on Dr. Phil.
I wanted to share this with everyone who knows and loves this guy and everyone who has never heard of him. Watch this video and be amazed at how fast his hands move! I am thankful for people that have amazing musical talent - I am severely lacking and love to see it in others. I know that ,for me, music is one of the fastest ways to feel something- whether that be the spirit or just another emotion like happiness or sadness. So, watch this and enjoy!
