Cool product

Abi and Maddy get the Highlights magazines from my parents and a while back I was on the website looking around and found this mystery package. I think it is such a cool thing for teaching geography in a fun way. I signed up to get it because I could get the first one free and then after that you get them periodically and can cancel anytime. I thought it would be a fun summer activity so I am getting them and saving them.
Each package features a different country and a mystery for the kids to solve. I thought it sounded cool but had no idea how much would be in the first package....
As you can see there is the mission letter, a huge map, a guide to China book, a puzzle book, a passport, the passport stamps to add as you go along, there was a carabener to put the keychains on and then you get a keychain of each country, and there are the suspect cards.
It all looks like so much fun I will probably enjoy it as much or more than Abi!

Raising Accountable Kids

I have tried many chore systems over the past few years. Most of them I have made myself and have helped a lot but over the past few months I have been really looking for something new... something different that would work better for our family and our needs.
At the beginning of the year when I was thinking about this constantly I decided to visit our church book store in Illinois. It is really far away so I don't get there often but that day we were trying to find things to do until Doug got off work so we could drive him home. I decided it was a great time to go visit.
While browsing I found a book called Accountable Kids by Scott and Traci Heaton.

There was also a chore system that went with the book but since it was a little more than I wanted to blindly spend on something I chose to spend the money on just the book to see what it was all about.
I spent the next few days immersed in this book knowing that it was something I wanted to try.
I went online and found the website for the Accountable Kids Program and ordered the kit.

So what is the Accountable Kids Program?

It is a parenting program to teach not only responsibility in the home through the chores but also accountability. It gives children control in a system where they learn to balance their choices and consequences.
The Accountable Kids Program includes a book ( I got mine separate but it is more cost effective to buy it as a kit), the Quick Start DVD, Progress Board, 50 reminder Cards, 3 Blank Reminder Cards, 10 Tickets, 10 Bonus Bucks, 3 Special Date Cards, 4 Best Behavior Cards, 2 Privilege Passes, and 2 sticker sheets.
I also bought an Accountable Kids Mini Board to hang over Abi's board so that I would have a convenient location to store the Reminder Cards, Best Behavior Cards, Privilege Passes, and Date Cards. I bought some extra tickets and date cards too.

This program is introduced over the course of four weeks implementing steps each week so it is not too overwhelming.
The first week I let Abi decorate her board and we hung up the boards near the kitchen.
That night we held a Family Home Evening and introduced Step one.

In Step One children learn to take care of personal responsibilities without constant direction. The first peg on the board holds Abi's 'core' chores- the chores that she is responsible for every day. These are broken up into morning chores (to be done before 10am), afternoon chores (to be done before dinner/ 5pm), and evening chores to be done before bedtime.
As soon as she is done with a chore she turns it over onto the finished peg. I don't have to follow her around making sure she is doing her chores. She is responsible for seeing what needs to be done and doing it. As soon as her chores for a time period are done she receives a ticket. Each ticket can be redeemed for something she likes to do like watching television or playing on the computer. During this week TV and computer time were reintroduced as a privilege that needs to be earned rather than a right.
These tickets also provide a form of discipline as I can take one away for bad behavior. Occasionally she won't have any tickets on her peg to take away and for these situations we have created a list of things that get taken away if there is no ticket (movie night, mid week movie afternoon, etc).

In Step Two we introduced the Privilege Pass. This is to eliminate certain negative behavior. It helps children to predict consequences and follow rules.
We also introduced the Special Date Card.  This Card allows children to work for future rewards while also enhancing parent/child relationships.
We use the Privilege Pass for bedtime. Abi was having issues going to bed. She would come out of her room pretending she was sleepwalking or yell for us to come up which would sometimes wake up Maddy. Also, we made a new rule that she needed to stay in her room until 7am so that she could wake up as early as she does but she would have to play nicely in her room until 7. This allowed me some extra time in the morning that I really needed. To earn the Privilege Pass every day she has to go to bed and stay in bed  and then stay in her room until 7am.
The Special date card has 10 squares on it and Abi gets a star for each day that she has earned all 3 tickets, meaning she has done all of her core chores that day. When she fills up the card with 10 squares she gets a special date with one of us.

In Step Three we introduced Extra Chores. These are chores that are not her responsibility every day but are things she can do to earn money. We give her a bonus buck for each chore and then at the end of the week we give her a quarter in exchange for each bonus buck. She loves this because it gives her the power to save up for things she wants that I say no to. This gives children the chance to learn how to save and manage their resources.

In Step Four we introduced a Family Forum and Quiet Time. We actually already did both of these but we discussed why and what we would get out of them. Our Family Forum is our Family Home Evening every Monday night. It is a time to discuss goals , problems, and accomplishments as a family as well as have some fun together.

Abi was so excited to do her chores every day. She loved getting her tickets and I was amazed at how she would really think through how she was going to use them. There were times when she wanted to watch a TV show but also wanted to play on the computer so she would have me split the time or days when she would say that she wanted to watch 15 minutes now and then save the rest for later. I really enjoyed seeing her plan out her time this way.
When we introduced the Privilege pass she wasn't too excited but she followed the rules most days because she wanted that Pass that could be used the same as a ticket.
She quickly earned all the stars on her first Special Date Card so that she could have me take her to get ice cream.

We are still working out all the details and tweaking the system to fit our needs but this system has really given Abi a tangible way to take control of her rewards and consequences.
It has also allowed me a way to get her to do what she is supposed to be doing without losing my temper.
In the book they state that your child will probably try to test the system at some point and we have been dealing with that this week.
There have been a few days that Abi just doesn't do her chores. I have had to do what the book tells you to do and let her fail. She won't do her chores and then she will want to watch a show and I have to tell her no because she doesn't have a ticket. I'm pretty sure that after a few more days of this she will go back to happily doing her chores every day!

The book also states that a lot of families decide to have a free day. A free day is a day where a child still needs to do their core chores but doesn't have to pay tickets for the things they usually do. We loved this idea feeling that kids need that. So on Saturdays she gets to have as much television or computer time as she wants without having to use tickets. This makes her so happy and yet we have noticed that she spends more time on her free days not watching TV then she used to. She will watch for a while and then go off to do something else and come back later. I love this.

So, what is my rating of this program? On a scale of 1-5 I would rate it a 4. I think it is a great program and have seen it work over the past month.
I was tempted to try to make up my own system after reading this book so I wouldn't have to pay for it but I realized that it was so worth it to have the package with all the cards delivered to me all ready for use. It would have been so much more work to make it myself.

If you would like to check out the system for yourself there website has a lot of information and videos to watch as well.

Backyard Safari review

I was able to visit the Summit Toy table at the Holiday Bloggers Brunch and get a look at a lot of their products as well as bring home this cute little lantern (which is going in Abi's stocking!)
It lights up and is so cute! She will love being able to read in bed at night with this thing.
Their other products were so much fun too! I wanted to bring them all home!

Backyard Safari line has things like a campfire glow lantern , field binoculars, a mega magnifier, a dual power flash light, firefly attractor, foam blow darts, lighted field scope, animal callers (an ocean caller that looks like an orca whale , a zoo caller that looks like a tiger, a dino caller- each that have 10 calls), a vacuum bug habitat, Bug Podz habitat construction set, a Field explorer kit, an Essential Field Gear Adventurer kit, a spyglass, a compass, a vest, and even camo netting! There are so many more things to look at on their web site. I would have loved this stuff as a child!
If you have a child that likes adventures you need to check this stuff out!

Their Zillionz brand products were also really cool. They have real money talking cash registers and ATM saving banks along with a bunch of other products to help your child learn about saving money. The ATM was really cool.

Playtex Baby Review

We were given the bottle with drop ins and the baby spoons at the Bloggers Brunch.
Playtex Drop-Ins bottle:
They say that these bottles are clinically shown to mimic breastfeeding as the liner collapses like the breast for an air-free feeding. Also the nipple promotes latch-on like the breast.
They are also clinically proven to reduce gas, colic, and spit up.
Playtex is the #1 pediatrician recommended brand.
The bottle is great. I like the look and the feel of it and Maddy seems to like it too but I , honestly, prefer a normal bottle. I think that this is because of Maddy's age. If she were a newborn or if I had just barely stopped breastfeeding her, this would have been perfect.

Infant spoons:
I LOVE these spoons. They are fantastic.
They are BPA-free and Phthalate free. The soft tip is gentle on baby's gums and teeth. The handles are ergonomically-designed to make feeding baby easy and comfortable and the long handle makes scooping food out of deep jars and bowls easy.
I have never had a baby spoon quite like these before. There really is a noticeable difference when you are using these compared to other ones I have. I am going to be buying more of these so I can get rid of my old ones!

You can find out more about these products at playtexbaby.com. Check out their bowl and plate sets when you are there. I didn't get one but I saw one there and they are so adorable!

Road Rippers Review

I was given two Road Rippers products to review and won the other two at the Holiday Bloggers Brunch. Here they are...
Once again, I wasn't sure if these were things that our girls would appreciate or enjoy but those thoughts vanished as both girls played with the cars (still in their packaging) all the way home.
The next morning we got them out of the boxes to try them out.
First up:
CAT e-z machine RC bulldozer
At first I was a little disappointed by this as I thought the remote control meant they could drive it all over the place like other remote control vehicles I have seen. The buttons on it are actually just stickers and it only has the one button that works that makes it drive forward. Only forward. The way it works is that there is a button on the cab of the bulldozer and when you push that it starts bouncing around and spinning and then you use the remote control to get it to stop spinning and bouncing and drive forward. I went back and looked at the box and realized that those were the only things it said it did ... so I should have read that first.
The girls and Doug thought it was really cool though. The bouncing scares Maddy a little... but it's not meant for 1 year old girls so I think that's fine. I think most little boys would get a huge kick out of this toy.

Next:
The Road Rippers 1971 Dodge Super Bee Motor Muscle car
This one we have not tried out as we want to give it to someone that we know will love it but we have tried the buttons that you can get to through the packaging. It plays the song "Shout" which I can imagine gets a little tedious. Other than that the car is really cool. It's pretty big and looks more like a model than a remote control toy. Along with the song it also has lights that work. Unlike the bulldozer, this remote control has the knobs and works the way you expect it to.
This car races forward and reverse and turns in all directions.
It also comes with a collectible card you cut out of the back of the box that tells your child a little about that particular car.
The collection includes a 1967 Corvette Stingray, 1969 Dodge Daytona, the Super Bee that we got, and the 1970 GTO Judge. Each car plays a different song particular to its era.
Although we haven't tried out everything about this car, I feel safe in saying it is a good pick for that person in your life that loves cars and remote control toys!

Next:
Road Rippers Road Rockin' Rides
To be perfectly honest I find this toy kind of annoying. This is because the song, "Pump up the Jam" has been played so many times at our house this week because of it.
When your child pushes the button on top of the car the lights go on and the song plays. It has a little circle on top of it that you can use to 'scratch' like a DJ. That's kind of fun to play with.
The girls love this car as you can see from the video of Maddy playing with it below. She loves the song.
Again, I would recommend it as something that your child will like but keep in mind how often that song plays!

The Last Product is:
The Road Rippers Flash Ride motorcycle. This one is pretty cool but has been played with the least.
It plays motorcycle sounds rather than songs which is a plus for me. It also lights up. If you have a child (or grown up) that loves motorcycles this is a great pick! It is nice looking and well made.

You can check out these toys and more at mymotorisland.com The web site is pretty amazing. It not only has products but also games for your child to play and even "Rippisodes"- an animated web series for kids starring Ripp, a teenager that likes to create and build one-of-a-kind vehicles in his garage.

In Zone's Life-Staged Brands juices review

In Zone's family of brands focus solely on children ages 1-10 years delivering their distinct life-stage needs.
Tummy Tickler Tots: For Toddlers ages 1-3, 40% Reduced Sugar Apple Juice

Tummy Tickler: For Preschoolers ages 3-5, 100% Juice- Apple

Belly Washers: For Grade Schoolers ages 5-10, 100% Juice- Fruit Punch

A little about this product:

No added sugar
No artificial flavors/colors
No high fructose corn syrup
No mess Tummy Tickler sippy spouts
No mess Belly Washers sport caps
Washable and Reusable
Recyclable

We were able to review all three of these juice products.
Maddy had never had packaged juice and she had never drank from this type of cap. She did quite well although she is still learning exactly how it works. I gave her the first one in the car and when she dropped it on the floor I was a little worried that there was going to be juice everywhere. BUT the product lived up to its promise and not a single drop came out of that sippy spout. It was so great.
Abi drank the other two and some of Maddy's refills and loved them all although the apple flavored were her favorite.
When we went grocery shopping the other day she begged me to get more. So, I'd say it is a winner!
I love the convenience and cuteness of the product as well as the fact that the Tummy Ticklers Tots is already the right consistency for toddlers and I didn't have to add water to it the way I do with other juice.
There are many different characters to choose from for your topper including the Strawberry Shortcake, Disney Princess, and Minnie Mouse that we picked. Other toppers include Winnie the Pooh characters, Toy Story, Little Einsteins, Fairies, Bob the Builder, Clifford, Hello Kitty, Superman, Spiderman.

Check them out for yourselves online at Tummytickler.com

We LOVED playing with this. We kept it out all day and all of us took a turn playing with it. It has been played with many more times since and now is in a bucket in the play area so it can be pulled out daily.
I wasn't sure how much Abi would enjoy this because sometimes we think of things like this as 'boy' toys. But she loved it.
Her favorite thing about this was that the Thomas and James trains can be taken apart and built again.
This is a great set that I highly recommend for your little ones!
Check out the Mega Brands website for this and many other really fun toys!
