Volcano Science

Last week we had volcano themed science projects.
We used food coloring, baking soda, vinegar, a paper bag, and a cup for this one that was supposed to be a simple erupting volcano.
It was... underwhelming.
It came out the bottom of the bag or the "fissures"as my mom said. My parents had dropped by for a few minutes so they stayed to watch the eruptions.

This one was cooler but I thought I would have a few more seconds before the eruption. It was the very common mentos dropped into soda...

Science: Bouncing Eggs

Science this week was crazy!
I have read about bouncing eggs all over the place and decided to try it.
You put an egg in vinegar in a jar. I read to have it be a covered glass bottle so that is what we did.
After a full 24 hours I added some more vinegar. By this time we could see that the shell was starting to dissolve.
After two full days the shell was completely gone and the egg inside looked like this...
It was very squishy. I had the girls come over to see if I could in fact bounce the egg on the counter.
Abi wanted me to dribble it like a basketball. I tried and it didn't work very well. Maddy wanted to try and it burst!

The egg and it's protective covering that felt plastic-y after it broke....

Science: Balloons

This week our science was all about balloons.
All of our supplies for balloon science:
Abi blowing up a balloon to use in making a hovercraft.
I glued a top of a bug juice to a CD...
Then we attached the balloon and opened the top.It floated around on the table top.
Can you blow up a balloon in a bottle? They both tried to blow up the balloon inside this 2 liter bottle but couldn't do it until we poked a hole in the bottom.
Then we mixed vinegar...
and baking soda...

and watched it blow up the balloon...

Science: Moving Water

This week's science project did not work as well as the last one.
I used toilet paper and I think if I would have had paper towels to use it would have done better.
We put water in two glasses with food coloring and the idea was that the colored water would move down the paper into the empty glass and make purple water.
It did actually start working as you can see the paper was starting to color. It was cool to watch it move. But then the paper broke.

The Rock Candy

Here are the finished Rock Candy sticks!
I took the rock candy out a bit before I probably should have. I think they would have been a little bigger if I had left them in a full week. The girls loved them though. They turned out pink just like Abi wanted and they said they tasted good. Success! This was a really fun project.

Science: Rock Candy

For science last week we started making rock candy.
The first attempt looked like this when it was setting and I was pretty sure that was wrong.
So we did a second batch and it looked like this...
Here they are on day 3. You can see all the sugar crystals starting on the sticks.
